Wash cozy blankets – this is how it works!

With these 5 tips, care instructions & home remedies, you can easily wash your blanket so that it stays fluffy and soft for a long time.

What is fluffy, keeps you warm and increases the comfort factor for home and soul? Right, the cozy blanket! But to keep your favorite piece long-lasting and clean, you should wash the blanket properly.

I myself have tried for a long time to avoid washing my favorite blanket as often as possible so as not to make any mistakes. That is over now!

I have put together a few important tips for you to keep your blanket soft and fluffy.

With these step-by-step instructions you are guaranteed not to go wrong washing your blanket.

General care instructions for blankets

The material is of course decisive for the care of your cozy blanket. To be on the safe side, look at the label or the care instructions on the packaging before cleaning.

In addition to the type of textile, you will find useful information on the washing process there.

But first, a little relief for you: almost all blankets are easy to care for and can be washed in the washing machine.

  • This is especially true for blankets made of synthetic fibers, such as fleece blankets or wool blankets made of cotton with Dralon or microfiber content.
  • Even faux fur blankets can be cleaned quickly and easily in the washing machine.

You should be careful with blankets made of pure cotton, merino wool or cashmere. But more on that later.

Step 1: The right washing program for your cozy blanket

Blankets are available in different sizes and even with sleeves attached. A dream for everyone who likes it really warm and cozy.

Depending on the size of your cozy blanket, you should definitely wash them individually in the washing machine without any other textiles.

Tip: If you want to save water for the sake of the environment, then please only wash your blanket with a few different textiles of the same color or the same material.

Above all, focus your attention on the washing programs available on your washing machine.

You can select one of the following programs for gentle cleaning:

  • Delicates program
  • Wool program
  • Normal gentle or easy-care program

However, it is not the name of the washing program that is important, but the spin speed and the temperature of the water.

Only wash your blanket at low temperatures and at a low speed.

For easy-care fleece blankets made of polyester, a delicate wash program with a temperature of 30 to 40 degrees and a low spin speed (between 600 or 800 revolutions) is recommended.

For sophisticated faux fur blankets or blankets made of a cotton-acrylic mixture, you should select a wool washing program and regulate the temperature even lower, to 20 to 30 degrees.

Step 2: The right detergent for your blanket

And again you can breathe a sigh of relief: Blankets do not require any special detergents. However, pay attention to the dosage recommendation and the hardness of the water.

In order to keep the color of your cozy blanket radiant or even to protect it from discoloration, mild detergents without optical brightening effects are suitable for woolen blankets.

Use colored detergent in liquid or powder form for fleece or microfiber blankets.

Sounds simple, but you are sure to face another problem:

Liquid detergent or washing powder?

To give you a guide to the properties of liquid detergents and washing powder, you will find a brief overview here:

Liquid detergent

  • Liquid detergents in bags or bottles dissolve more easily and can be optimally dosed.
  • They contain all the important substances you need to clean your blanket.
  • Make sure your liquid laundry detergent does not contain bleach or water softeners.

For fleece blankets, it is worth using a liquid detergent with optical brighteners to avoid a gray haze. Please wash cotton blended blankets without optical brighteners.

OFFER

The advantage of liquid detergents in contrast to washing powder is that you can use liquid detergent to avoid unpopular white detergent residue.

Disadvantage: Many liquid detergents contain preservatives that can cause skin irritations or allergies.

washing powder

  • Washing powder is available in classic powder form, as pearls or in the form of taps.
  • The dosage depends on the hardness of the water and the degree of soiling of your blanket.
  • Powdered detergents contain bleach and are very suitable for white blankets to prevent a gray haze.

Advantage: They do not contain any preservatives that could cause skin irritation or allergies.

Disadvantage: If the dosage is incorrect, white residues can form on your blanket, which can only be removed by repeated washing.

Since washing powder is sustainable and available in large quantities, you not only protect your wallet, but also the environment.

Alternative: washing egg

Another environmentally friendly alternative to conventional detergents is the so-called washing egg (also called washing ball).

Washing eggs are natural detergents based on minerals and detergent substances that are placed in the egg in the form of balls. With the washing egg you can keep your laundry clean and fresh.

In addition, the ingredients are hypoallergenic and therefore particularly skin-friendly, but free of additional fragrances.

I’ve been using the wash egg for more than a year and I’m very satisfied. For heavy soiling or for a fresh scent, however, I also use heavy-duty detergent every now and then. It’s worth trying!

3rd step: use fabric softener – yes or no?

Be careful with fabric softeners. Fabric softeners are there to make your textiles softer, they let the laundry dry faster and also prevent static charging of the washed fabrics.

At the same time, the softener gives your blankets a wonderful scent, which you can use to increase your feel-good factor.

Nevertheless, the detergent is one of the greatest enemies of the environment and can make almost all modern textiles made of microfiber, for example, unusable.

Cuddly blankets are so soft and fluffy because the individual small fibers stand up when they come into contact with other textiles or your own skin.

  • When using fabric softeners, you run the risk of these fine fibers becoming knotted together.
  • Small pimples can also form on the smooth fabric, making the fabric rougher and possibly scratching the skin.

Whether you want to use the “fabric softener” risk factor for your wash cycle is entirely up to you.

Either way, consider the manufacturer’s recommendations or use vinegar instead.

Yes you’ve read correctly…

Tip: Simply add a dash of household vinegar or vinegar essence to the fabric softener compartment and start the rinse cycle. This old household trick makes your blanket just as fluffy and soft and lasts much longer.

For example, I can recommend table vinegar from Kühne or vinegar from the Hengstenberg brand .

4th step: drying the blanket

Although cozy blankets are suitable for the dryer, I recommend conventional air drying – especially to protect sensitive materials. Otherwise, small fluff could be deposited on your blanket again in the dryer or even damage the structure of the fabric.

Drying on the clothesline can also prove to be unfavorable, because direct UV radiation can deprive the ceiling of its bright colors or even deform it. The same applies to the heating: an absolute no-go!

So that your blanket does not warp and retains its original shape, we recommend a commercial clothes horse with wings.

  • Simply fold the wet blanket lengthways and spread it over the stand like a carpet.
  • After a short time, fold the blanket to turn damp spots outwards and speed up the drying process.

Do you still want to try the dryer? Attention! Only use the tumble dryer if it has a gentle program on it. Also observe the manufacturer’s care instructions.

  • Put your blanket in the dryer without any other textiles. The blanket needs a lot of space so that the cozy fibers can stand up.
  • Try to reduce the temperature as much as possible.
  • Then place the damp blanket on a clothes horse.

Personally, I always let my blanket air dry spread out on a clothes horse after washing.

5th step: Further care tips

In the following I would like to give you three more tips so that your blanket retains its color and shape and you can easily remove lint.

Protect color

Whether sofa, armchair or bed – we often put our blankets in exactly the same place. It pays to change your own rhythm. By changing the storage location, you can prevent discoloration from UV rays.

Get shape

You can achieve real miracles if you regularly fold and turn your blanket. This can help keep the shape and make stiff materials like cotton more flexible.

Remove lint

Lint rollers are suitable for quick cleaning without great effort. These are cheap and available in many clothing stores or online. Simply run the roll over the ceiling and then change the adhesive strip.

Three personal blanket recommendations

Cuddly blankets are not only an absolute trend product, but are also perfect as a gift for you and your loved ones.

In the meantime, blankets – whether for cuddling, for the couch or as a bedspread – are also very affordable and available from just 20 euros.

To make your choice easier, I have put together three of the most popular products made from different materials:

Saving tip: Bedsure blanket

Bedsure’s fluffy microfiber blanket is a real savings tip.

It is extra fluffy, keeps you warm and consists of a breathable fabric. The integrated anti-wrinkle protection makes the blanket absolutely durable and easy to care for.

You get the blanket in 17 elegant colors and in four different sizes.

Completely ecological: STTS cotton blanket

This designer blanket is made from 100% ecological and non-toxic new wool.

The living room and cozy blanket gets a rustic character from the small decorative fringes on the outer edges of the blanket.

The breathable wool protects the blanket from overheating and transports excess moisture to the outside.

Unfortunately, this model is a bit more demanding due to the material. The blanket can be washed with a wool program and a temperature of 20 degrees.

The eye-catcher: VasKinRey cozy blanket

A price class higher, but an absolute eye-catcher for your living room. The cuddly blanket from VasKinRey impresses with the fluffy, ivory-white synthetic fur made of 100% microfiber polyester.

The underside is made of polar fleece and is therefore non-slip and prevents dirt from building up. This fluffy blanket is washable at 30 ° C, suitable for tumble drying and available in three different sizes.

Conclusion

With a few simple tips, you can keep your blanket soft and clean at the same time. You do not need any special detergents for this.

  • It is best to use mild detergents or color fine detergents and alternatives such as washing eggs.
  • Instead of a fabric softener, it is best to use normal household vinegar so that the blanket stays cozy and soft.
  • Air dry your blanket lying on a drying rack.

On the other hand, it is better to avoid washing powder and the dryer. You should also follow the care instructions on the label and select a program with a low speed and temperatures around 30 to 40 degrees.

Warning: some blankets can only be washed by hand.
