The best wall-folding beds for little space

Whether vertical or horizontal, different sizes & manufacturers, with this buying guide you will find the right folding wall bed. With tips to build yourself.

Wall-folding beds are one thing above all: practical. Whether for guest rooms, offices, holiday homes, hotels, living rooms or student dormitories, the comfortable seating and sleeping furniture is space-saving and has long since become a real design element.

However, there is one shortcoming – the large selection of different models leads to sleepless nights.

This buying guide will not only help you make the right decision, but also ensure a more restful sleep.

Wall-mounted folding bed vs. Murphy bed

During the search for the “perfect bed” I came across several terms – from “wall-folding bed” to “multifunctional bed” to “wall bed”.

Don’t be confused – the functionality of the bed, useful accessories such as storage space and, first and foremost, of course, your own preferences are decisive.

For this guide I will go into fold-away beds and wall beds, but at the end you will find a list of alternative and comfortable sleeping options that are also space-saving.

Advantages of wall-folding beds

As a practical person, you already know about the numerous advantages of wall-mounted folding beds, with which you can achieve not only maximum use of space, but also the desired sleeping comfort.

Equipped with a robust bed cover, wall-mounted folding beds are also suitable as a sofa or seating furniture during the day. For example, when guests come to visit, as a place to rest or when the pet needs more space to sleep again.

Different models

Before making a purchase, however, you should first ask yourself how much space you have, how big your bed should be and whether your universal genius either:

  • offer further storage options or
  • should be as simple as possible.

Wall-folding beds or fold-away beds can be divided into three different models.

  1. Vertical wall-folding bed with storage space
  2. Vertical wall-folding bed without storage space
  3. Horizontal wall-mounted bed without storage space

I will explain below how these three models differ in terms of appearance and functionality.

Vertical wall-folding bed with storage space

If you like things big and roomy, keep an eye out for models that come with shelves, drawers, pivoting shelves and even wardrobes.

These are particularly suitable, for example, for the guest room or a single apartment. The additional storage options offer space for books, decorative material or work utensils.

Vertical wall-folding bed without storage space

Models of the same size are also available without compartments and are of course much more space-saving and simpler. The folding bed from SMARTBett is one of the price-performance winners.

Almost all beds have a folding mechanism with which you can fold the bed either lengthways (vertically) or crosswise (horizontally) so that the mattress and slatted frame disappear into the box.

However, there are also wall-folding beds that resemble a wardrobe and can be opened on both sides with double doors. These models are also available in different sizes.

Horizontal wall-mounted bed without storage space

Another type of wall-folding bed is smaller, less functional and available without additional compartments. There are also single beds that can be used as a chest of drawers. These simple variants are suitable for children’s rooms, the office or dormitory.

It applies to all wall beds that they must be attached to the wall to prevent them from tipping over. Who would want to sleep face down?

Tip: Did you know that it is unhealthy to sleep on your stomach? Sleep experts advise getting used to it as soon as possible, because the mattress makes breathing difficult at night. The right pillow can work wonders.

Sizes

Pull out your yardstick! From large double beds measuring almost two meters to smaller single beds measuring 60 centimeters wide – the range of bed sizes is huge.

Before deciding on an exotic bed size, think about your bedding too. For all common mattress sizes there is the right bed linen at lower prices in supermarkets. Exotic oversized bed linen have an impact on the wallet and are usually only available online or in specialist shops.

Stay on the safe side and choose one of the four most popular sizes:

  • Size 90 × 200: single bed, suitable for 1 person, up to max.90kg
  • Size 120 × 200: single bed, suitable for max. 2 people, up to max.120kg
  • Size 140 × 200: double bed, suitable for max. 3 people, up to max. 120 kg
  • Size 180 × 200: double bed, suitable for max. 4 people, up to max.140kg

Note that this is the size of the mattress and slatted frame and not the actual dimensions of the wall-mounted bed. These vary with the size of the box and additional components.

In addition to the available space, you should also think about your own height and sleeping habits.

My partner is almost 2 meters tall and loves to throw his arms at me at night. I, on the other hand, am 1.65 meters and like to transform into a snail while sleeping. Obviously a natural protective function, but rather unsuitable for a healthy sleep on a 90 × 200 meter bed.

  • Single beds are suitable as mummy sleepers with little space or for small earth dwellers in kindergarten or school age.
  • For lovers of extroverted sleep, families with children or those who are working on it, double beds with a width of 120 to 140 cm are the optimal solution.

I am sure that after thinking about the points above, you can decide which size is right for you.

mattress

There was a time when I slept on two different mattresses. This was mainly due to the fact that a mattress (suitable for my Ikea bed frame) was already worn out. The other was too low, but easy on the back and very comfortable. Both together made a perfect combination, although I still have to live with the nickname “princess” to this day.

But let’s face it, choosing the right mattress is a science in itself. My little anecdote should also show you how important a high-quality mattress is for a healthy sleep.

Tip: You will find all the important criteria on the advice page. For example, which mattress fits your back and which filling ensures a dreamy deep sleep.

Unfortunately, most wall-folding beds are delivered without a mattress. Basically, rigid mattresses, cold foam or mattresses with pocket spring core are suitable for wall flaps. Beds that can be folded up or extended need a flexible mattress made of latex or soft cold foam.

Every now and then you will find valuable comments from the providers, which also point out suitable mattress models and the suitable mattress height (often between 18-20 cm).

You can also easily make your mattress a lot more comfortable with a mattress topper .

Slatted frame

In contrast to a mattress, however, almost all models have a slatted frame.

  • To be on the safe side, look at the manufacturer’s instructions before buying, because the slatted frame is either integrated in the bed box or can be removed or adjusted.
  • Straps for fastening bedding or bedclothes are included in the scope of delivery, depending on the model, and are very useful if you want to fold your bed during the day or for a longer period of time.

A small exception is, for example, the model Bumerrang from furniture24.eu, because the wall-mounted folding bed has additional storage space and a mattress is included in the scope of delivery.

Processing, material & colors

Of course – the material and the workmanship determine the quality of your wall-mounted bed. Most suppliers speak of “high quality workmanship” and have been awarded the “Blue Angel” environmental seal. The latter stands for products that have been processed and manufactured in a particularly environmentally friendly manner. It is best to pay attention to this when choosing.

Almost all wall-mounted folding bed models are made of pressed board and are covered with a laminate coating. This combination of materials makes the bed very easy to care for and enables it to be set up conveniently and easily in no time at all.

You can simply wipe the surface with a damp cloth. You should also take care not to expose the materials to direct sunlight to avoid discoloration. This is especially true for models in dark colors or wood imitations.

The wall-mounted folding beds are often available in different color combinations, such as:

  • White – high gloss or matte
  • Sonoma oak, Sanremo or brown
  • Gray or graphite

Attention: I noticed that screws and dowels for attaching the folding bed to the wall are usually not included in the scope of delivery.

The furniture is also supplied in packages with assembly instructions for self-assembly. Unfortunately, the shipping company does not offer an assembly service, so you should inform friends and family in advance and ask for help.

Hobby hobbyists & bargain hunters watch out!

The living space in big cities and in the metropolises of this world is getting smaller and smaller and requires innovative spatial concepts. Small apartments are no longer just an emergency solution for low-wage earners or students, but have become a global trend. Today they have become an expression of lifestyle and smart living.

Brands such as IKEA, Tchibo or Neckermann have long recognized this and offer modern and chic wall-folding beds or wall beds with which you can save space, live the lifestyle and even save a euro.

For bargain hunters

You can find good offers both online and “offline” in stores.

Online

In order to get a good overview, we recommend providers with a large selection. On sites like Amazon you can find out about prices and providers and benefit from special offers with coupons and discounts.

Don’t let big, well-known brands put you off either. Tchibo, for example, surprises me with a small range of wall-mounted folding beds measuring 90 × 200 meters , which are available with or without storage space. The same models can also be found on other websites, but Tchibo does not charge any delivery or shipping fees for wall-mounted folding beds.

The foldaway bed “Sognum” foldaway bed from Neckermann is also a small miracle that you can’t go wrong with. Disguised as a chest of drawers, in a great, simple design and at an unbeatable price, the folding bed is even delivered with a mattress and slatted frame. You also benefit from free shipping.

Offline

Inexpensive wall-mounted folding beds are not only available online, but also offline at furniture stores such as Höffner or Roller . These also offer many other advantages, such as a so-called measurement service for measuring your apartment, on-site assembly of the furniture by trained craftsmen, the return of old furniture or a free annual inspection.

For hobbyists

If you are the kind of person who likes to design your own pieces of furniture, then the Internet offers a wealth of technical instructions, video tutorials and lists of all the necessary components for the perfect wall bed according to your wishes.

Individual components such as a bracket including slatted frame in various sizes can be easily found online.

However, the right instructions are more important: G&M Technikverlag, for example, offers a complete collection of 229 wall bed patents. The book is filled with ideas, detailed descriptions and technical drawings that can be recreated.

If you like it compact and understandable, you will find useful help and ideas for your own creations at IKEA .

Alternative sleeping options

If you are not 100 percent committed to a wall-mounted bed, the following alternatives may be an option for you.

Recliner

On my trip through Russia a few years ago I often slept with friends or acquaintances who offered me a bed. However, bed is not the right word, because I was able to discover that it is very common in the East to sleep on so-called armchairs.

In fact, they gave me the best sleep I’ve ever had. Reclining chairs are of course not a product of the East and fortunately also available in this country.

Air beds

As convenient and affordable alternative sleeping also prove inflatable air beds , but this is not a complete substitute represent for the normal bed because you only partially adapt to your own body.

As a guest bed for the occasional visit or for a fun tent excursion in nature, these are still highly recommended.

The living concept of the future: IKEA ROGNAN

The Swedish furniture genius IKEA is showing the way again. Under the motto “Futuristic Living: Murphy Bed 4.0” , IKEA, together with an American start-up company, has developed a multifunctional piece of furniture that is bed, wardrobe and sofa at the same time.

But that’s not all – the universal genius can change its form and function via a control module with touchpad. The model is intended to enable great benefits in a small area, but initially only in Japan and Hong Kong. Europe will have to wait for “ROGNAN”.

Conclusion

Wall-mounted folding beds or wall beds are a practical and space-saving solution for small apartments.

  • Please always make sure that most wall-folding beds are delivered without a mattress, but mostly with a slatted frame.
  • Basically, rigid mattresses made of cold foam or mattresses with pocket spring core are suitable for wall flaps.

All models, with or without integrated shelves, shelves or drawers, are available in four common sizes:

  • Size 90 × 200: single bed, suitable for 1 person, up to max.90kg
  • Size 120 × 200: single bed, suitable for max. 2 people, up to max.120kg
  • Size 140 × 200: double bed, suitable for max. 3 people, up to max. 120 kg
  • Size 180 × 200: double bed, suitable for max. 4 people, up to max.140kg

You can find wall-folding beds at attractive prices not only online, but also offline in local furniture stores. The advantage over an online order is the on-site assembly in your apartment.

If you decide on a model from the Internet, inform friends or acquaintances in advance so that they can help you with the construction.

You can find cheap models and a large selection on Amazon, for example. I have summarized some recommended models for you here:

Alternative sleeping options such as air beds or armchairs are comfortable and inexpensive, but are not a complete substitute for the bed.
