What is important in a summer duvet?
Anyone who sleeps under a thick winter blanket in summer will probably wake up sweaty and unbalanced.
A lighter blanket that can dissipate moisture, keep warmth low and overall is nice and light – an optimal summer duvet makes sleeping much more pleasant.
The optimal duvet for the summer should above all:
- be light
- Dissipate moisture
- have a low heat retention capacity
If you are allergic or sweat easily, you can also get special summer duvets.
That is why the filling material and the material of the cover are particularly decisive when choosing.
Filling material of the summer duvet
The filling material of the summer duvet is crucial in order not to break a sweat at night. Some materials are better at dissipating moisture or heat, while others nestle lightly against the skin.
Material costs at a glance:
- Higher priced: silk, cashmere and camel hair.
- Medium price segment: cotton and down summer duvets
- Inexpensive: Lyocell and microfiber
Below I give you an overview of the available filling materials.
down
With down duvets , a high proportion of down should be ensured. Then they are not only nice and light, but also moisture-regulating. Down blankets are not suitable if you sweat profusely at night.
Lyocell
Lyocell are synthetic fibers that can absorb moisture well without feeling noticeably damp. Lyocell is very suitable for people with sweating and allergies.
Microfiber / polyester
Synthetic microfiber blankets are light and warm. They are not recommended for heavy sweats.
Kamelflaum
Soft camel fluff is not only nice and cozy – as a filling it regulates moisture and can handle both heat and cold well.
Kashmir
As a filling material for a summer duvet, cashmere is very pleasant on the skin and regulates the temperature.
Materials for the cover of the summer duvet
The material of the cover is crucial for a comfortable sleep. You should consider whether you sweat a lot at night or whether you suffer from allergies.
The best materials for summer include cotton and silk.
cotton
With the classic cotton as a cover, you choose a fabric that is robust and dissipates heat.
silk
Silk not only hugs the body in a pleasantly cool manner, but also effectively wicks moisture away from the body. This makes silk particularly attractive for sweaters.
Correct size of the summer duvet
The summer duvet is the right size if you can really snuggle up in it from head to toe.
The standard format of 135 * 200 cm extends up to a height of 1.80 m. From 1.80 m you should choose a summer duvet of 155 * 220 cm.
Duvet variants
When choosing a summer duvet, it not only depends on the material, but also on the variant.
- The classic summer duvet is a thin, light blanket.
- Duo duvets that you can also use in winter are a great idea.
The thin, light Somme duvet
The classic summer duvet has a quilted check pattern. This ensures that the upper and lower fabric are connected to one another.
This leads to effective heat dissipation. A light, thin blanket that wicks away moisture well.
The duo summer duvet
The combi summer duvet offers three duvets in one.
A light summer duvet and a slightly thicker one for the transition can be brought together to form a thick winter duvet using press studs.
For me, the advantage of the combination duvet is obvious – they are a true all-rounder:
- Instead of a single summer duvet, which I can only use for a limited time each year, I get three.
- I find it more flexible to be able to fall back on a thin summer duvet, a slightly thicker transitional duvet and – both tied together – a winter duvet.
- But if you already have a nice winter duvet, the simple summer duvets are the right choice for you.
Whether it is a combination duvet or not – pay attention to your own needs when buying a summer duvet.
There are great summer duvets that take allergy sufferers and night owls into consideration. Here I have put together some tips for you.
Summer duvet for allergy sufferers
Allergy sufferers should generally look carefully at the label when buying blankets: anti-allergenic bedding is the keyword. It depends on the material.
Down is considered anti-allergenic because it is difficult for dust mites to get through. Here you should pay attention to a down content of at least 90%.
Lyocell is also well suited for allergy sufferers. The synthetic fiber is also washable!
Allergy sufferers should pay attention to the following:
- Antiallergenic bedding is also labeled as such.
- Buy down comforters only with a down content of 90% or more.
- Lyocell is anti-allergenic and also easy to wash.
Then you can also get a restful sleep in summer.
Summer duvet for night owls
If you sweat heavily at night , you should put on a summer blanket that can wick away moisture.
A light summer duvet made of pure cotton is ideal for night owls.
A little more expensive, but even more comfortable on the skin, are silk blankets.
- If you sweat a lot at night, get a summer duvet made of pure cotton or silk.
- In general, a cover made of comfortably cooling silk is a good idea.
Tip: If silk blankets are too expensive for you, just get yourself a silk cover.
Summer duvets under € 50 in comparison
I really like the duvet covers. Blankets that are light in summer and nice and thick in winter. A summer duvet and a transitional duvet that use buttons to create a thick winter duvet. Perfect!
Everyone is different, however, and so you should also choose the summer duvet that suits you best.
My recommendations are therefore three light summer duvets that regulate moisture, are washable, suitable for allergy sufferers and convincing in terms of value for money.
Aqua-textil Soft Touch
The duo summer duvet contains a light, thin summer duvet and a warmer transitional duvet. Both blankets can be knotted together to form a winter blanket using press studs.
The duvets are made of microfiber and are therefore breathable and washable.
In addition, the duvet cover is suitable for allergy sufferers.
This 4 seasons duvet is the cheapest option among my recommendations and has a great price-performance ratio.
Betten-Traum-Land summer hit summer blanket
The filling material of this light, thin summer duvet is made of Lyocell. The cotton cover feels comfortable on the body.
The combination of materials makes this summer duvet particularly suitable for allergy sufferers and night owls.
In addition, it is particularly light and washable.
With a price of less than € 50, it’s actually a summer hit.
Wild silk cotton summer blanket
Silk and cotton make this summer blanket ideal for night owls and allergy sufferers.
Thanks to the materials it is a light, cooling and supple summer duvet.
This blanket is also washable and offers a great price-performance ratio for a silk blanket (60% silk).
Conclusion: summer duvets
Summer duvets can beautify your sleep on hot summer nights.
- Pay attention to the right material: is it washable, breathable, suitable for allergy sufferers?
- If you sweat a lot, go for silk; if you just need a loose doily, go for cotton.
The effect on your sleep should definitely be positive.
