The best plate slatted frames in the test

Everything about plate slats: What benefits they bring for your health and which models convinced me in a comparison test.

When the word ‘plate slatted’ is used for the first time, a bit of confusion can arise.

  • After all, the first thoughts “Am I actually lying on a plate at night?” Are probably similar for everyone.
  • You might not be all that wrong. Because this special type of slatted frame actually consists of plates.

Of course, these are not made of porcelain or ceramic like the plates in the kitchen.

Rather, plate slatted frames offer a sensible and considerable alternative to conventional slatted frames.

  • Why? I would like to convey that to you in the following article. And everything else to consider when buying a plate slatted frame.
  • However, if you are only interested in the product itself, you will find the convincing test winner from the product comparison here:

If you’d like to get an impression for yourself, feel free to read the full guide:

Let’s start with some basic information:

What are plate slats?

Instead of being equipped with spring wood slats, a plate slatted frame has many individual elements.

These plate-shaped materials do not only move vertically and horizontally.

They adapt as best as possible to the lying body in all sleeping positions and on the entire lying surface.

  • The plate slatted frame ensures maximum sleeping comfort in your bed. Of course, this qualitative upgrade is initially a little more expensive than the usual prices for a slatted frame.
  • In contrast to a rigid and ordinary slatted frame, not only does the mattress itself give way when lying down. The substructure also moves with your movements.

The plate slatted frame is therefore the ideal variant and particularly suitable for older people and very active sleepers.

Conversely, there are no people to whom the use of a plate slatted frame is not advisable. Basically, plate grids are suitable for everyone because they can be individually adapted to each user.

What do I have to consider before buying?

Regardless of the number of processed plate elements within the slatted frame, you should also consider the maximum load. Not every plate rack is suitable for every body weight.

In addition, not many mattresses can be used for plate slatted frames. In theory, you can place any type of mattress on a plate slatted frame.

But: the harder and thicker a mattress, the less it affects the slatted frame.

To put it another way: If your mattress is too resistant overall, the pleasant spring effect of the plate slatted frame is lost.

The plate elements described above, with their exact adaptability, naturally also require a good mattress that flexibly and elastically adapts to your movements.

These mattresses are best suited and recommended for a plate slatted frame:

The advantages of these elastic and sensitive mattresses are supplemented or reinforced by a plate slatted frame.

  • Some manufacturers (e.g. Tempur) also have special plate mattresses that have been specially developed for these slatted frames.
  • So if you equip yourself with a completely new place to sleep, then you also have a free choice of mattress.

However, if you just want to buy a new slatted frame and opt for the plate slatted frame, you should check your existing mattress.

If this does not generally fit the plate slatted frame, you can at least no longer use your old mattress in the same shape and you would also have to equip yourself again.

If you are more used to sleeping on a hard surface, you will have to get used to the plate slatted frame first. It will take time for your back to make friends with the rather soft and flexible sleeping surface.

Which model variants are there?

A plate slatted frame is no different from other slatted frames. You can also choose between plate slatted frames

  • rigid plate slats
  • manually adjustable plate slats
  • electrically motorized plate slats.

The price classes are of course also in ascending order. A rigid plate slatted frame is cheaper than the mechanical or even electrical choice with a motor.

In addition to these basic variants, there are also some differences in the design of the products, which I would like to explain in a little more detail:

Plate roll grille

Probably the cheapest option is the roll-out plate grate. The plate elements lie on horizontal strips that are mostly made of wood.

Usually these are then screwed to the bed after rolling out in order to allow additional stability. If that didn’t happen, you would feel an unstable sliding back and forth in your nightly movements.

This variant is of course ideal for transport and storage as it takes up much less space when rolled up than conventional slatted frames.

However, these plates cannot move freely through 360 °. Although these are not vertically springy, they give way to your movements on the bed.

Multi-zone plate grate

In terms of quality, you will find the multi-zone plate grid on a shelf higher up. This has 5 or 7 different zones that protect your back and make healthy lying comfort possible.

By dividing the plate slatted frame into either 5 or 7 different zones, these areas adapt individually to your movements at night.

Of course, more zones mean greater individuality in the setting options. And at the same time greater comfort for the person who wants to go to bed.

Hybridlösungen

There are also combinations with slatted frames, which consist of plates and wooden strips. These products combine advantages in application from both elements.

The most advanced solution in this case is if an electric drive also controls the plate slatted frame.

Which variant is recommended?

If you would like to hear my opinion regardless of this and any possible budget issues, I would recommend an electric plate rack.

  • This equips you for multiple purposes and also gives you the greatest possible freedom.
  • The most modern models also have a memory that can remember their preferred position.

So you don’t have to laboriously click on the remote control for minutes before you find your favorite position again.

The test winner

Of course, these 5 plate slatted frames are also aimed at different target groups.

You yourself know best which product is suitable for your purposes or which plate slatted frame will best fit in your bedroom or bed.

The good news is: All of these elements are combined in the plate slatted frame from Ravensberger Matratzen.

The shoulder and pelvic area is equipped with 25 plate spring elements. 29 beech slats are mounted on the head area and off the hips.

Although the hardness of the plates can no longer be adjusted, the head and back sections as well as the seat frame can be adjusted manually.

The manufacturer is so convinced of his product that he offers this plate slatted frame a manufacturer’s guarantee of 10 years. I’ve rarely seen anything like that before.

In addition, the plate slatted frame is delivered pre-installed and partially assembled. As a customer, you end up having to do fewer work steps during assembly than with many other products.

The dimensions are 120 x 200 cm and have a load capacity of 130 kg. There are many different dimensions of this product to choose from.

The most flexible plate slatted frame

With 140 x 200 cm and 5 different zones on 11 beech wood struts ensure a comfortable and pleasant sleep. Beech wood is robust and stable.

Your spine and back muscles will relax on this ergonomic and comfortable surface.

There must be a side support bar in your bed box, otherwise you cannot hang or fix this plate slatted frame. So check in good time whether your bed also has such a support strip.

I was surprised by the manufacturer’s statement that this plate slatted frame is suitable for all mattresses. In my opinion, this is the greatest benefit for the user and you can buy and use the product unconditionally.

The cheapest alternative

It is also possible to purchase a plate slatted frame for less than 100 euros.

The low price doesn’t come without a catch. As a customer, you would have to assemble the individual elements of the plate slatted frame yourself at home.

The dimensions of the slatted frame are 90 x 200 cm.

Without a side support, you cannot attach this slatted frame to your bed frame. So please make sure before buying that your bed has the appropriate struts.

A different degree of hardness of the individual plate elements for the individual body parts ensures intervertebral disc relief through coordinated, soft shoulder and pelvic positioning. The construction enables optimal air circulation for a comfortable sleeping climate.

A plate slatted frame with a motor

Of course, all solutions that go beyond the rigid or mechanical slatted frames go a little more expensive. This is no different with the electric plate slatted frame with a motor.

I would characterize this product as a great solution that delivers an entire sleeping space right away. In addition to the plate slatted frame to be expected, you will also receive 4 feet with which you can theoretically assemble and set up an entire bed.

The entry height is no higher than 15 cm and not necessarily suitable for seniors. However, you only need a mattress to complete the sleeping space. In that case, an interesting and useful alternative that you would be able to choose when purchasing.

At first glance, it can be assumed that this solution may over-meet the needs of a single person. However, this electric plate slatted frame is a good solution for all those people who would like to use a wide range of options when choosing a place to sleep.

In addition, you don’t have to use the feet and you can hang this plate slatted frame in your existing bed frame at home. The spring slats are made of birch wood, which are extremely robust yet flexible.

However, this does not rule out the possibility that you cannot use this slatted frame as a couple. With the dimensions 90 x 200 cm, two of these plate slatted frames fit into a bed box.

The luxury variant

The high-end version is available from the same manufacturer of the aforementioned flexible plate slatted frame. In this case, high end also means high price, but this plate slatted frame is not a leader in its price class for nothing.

A modular technology guarantees a constant and pin-elastic pressure distribution over the entire lying surface. No matter what position you are in, you have the same comfort on the outside of the mattress as on the inside.

In the particularly sensitive shoulder and pelvic area, the spring elements are also made of softer rubber.

As before, the manufacturer describes that you can combine any type of mattress with this plate slatted frame.

However, the delivery weight of 20 kilograms is not that easy to lift. With a size of 140 x 200 cm, however, there is space for two people on this plate slatted frame.

Conclusion

As already mentioned, a plate slatted frame has several advantages over traditional slatted frames.

The right slatted frame can help to avoid tension and shoulder pain after sleeping .

So if you want maximum sleeping comfort at night, then spend an extra euro on the electric version.

Not only are the high-priced models particularly reliable and durable. By the way, it is also very convenient when the electric drives transport you to the desired position with millimeter precision.

If you invest your budget appropriately in this case, you will have made the right choice for a very long time.

I created Sleep Knowledge to share my interests and experiences on healthy sleeping with others. On this page I am therefore dealing with interesting questions about the optimal night’s sleep & everything else that goes with it.
