Why the “best pillow” might be wrong for you
A pillow is one of the most personal items that many people have. Some even take their pillow with them when they travel, because healthy sleep is impossible without them.
But even if you don’t go that far: If you are about to buy a new pillow, it should be tailored to your personal requirements.
Whether a pillow can support the neck and back properly depends on your personal sleeping habits:
- Sleeping position: people who sleep on their sides need a higher pillow than those who sleep on their backs – otherwise the head will sag to the side and put strain on the neck
- Body shape: The shape of the spine or the position of the shoulders is usually different – a suitable pillow should take this into account.
- Complaints: If you suffer from tension or other complaints (allergies, snoring), you may need a special pillow.

Before I get to a few recommended models, you should definitely know more about the key properties of a pillow.
This is the only way you can choose a suitable variant and really get a healthy sleep. The most important consideration before buying has nothing to do with the type of material or the pillow filling, but with your sleeping position.
The type of pillow depends on the sleeping position
Basically we humans sleep in 3 different positions:
- On the back – the healthiest option, because the spine remains as straight as possible.
- On the side – here is a suitable pillow, otherwise the head hangs down.
- On your stomach – it’s best to get used to this unhealthy way of sleeping right away.
There are special pillows for stomach sleepers, but they only bring a little relief. If you sleep on your stomach, this can be an indication of (chronic) tension or misalignment.
In summary: Your sleeping position is decisive for buying the right pillow – even before considering the right size, filling and pillow type.
For most people, sleeping on their back is the healthiest: the body can relax and breathe freely. In the following section you will find out what you should pay particular attention to when buying a back pillow.

The right pillow for back sleepers
Most importantly: The spine should be as straight as possible on the mattress so that no tension or one-sided stress can arise.

The shoulders should be on the mattress

The right pillow for side sleepers
A stable side position also promotes healthy sleep – at least if the spine remains in a straight position during the night.
The right sleeping aid is extremely important:
- If the pillow is too high , the cervical vertebrae are excessively stressed & pushed upwards.
- On the other hand, if it is too low, your head will sink downwards. The spine is no longer straight.
In addition, an unsuitable headrest is very uncomfortable in most cases. The shoulders go to sleep after a while and you turn restlessly back and forth.
The right pillow brings back a piece of quality of life.
Does it have to be a side pillow for healthy sleep?
For this reason, there are special pillows for side sleepers that differ in shape from the classic pillow.
During the night you can “hug” the pillow in the side position and you no longer sleep twisted. The elongated design fulfills several functions at once:

In the following chapters, I will first focus on the different types of pillows because they have a decisive influence on sleep.
Which filling material is the best?
Nowadays there are pillows with innumerable fillings – each of them has its own strengths (comfort, washability or hygiene for allergies).
To give you a quick overview, I will briefly present the individual variants and their respective advantages and disadvantages.
Artificial fiber cushion
Sleep aids made of polyester, foam, latex or wadding are the most common these days. For these reasons:
- Synthetic fiber pillows are cheap to buy compared to the other variants (e.g. down pillows).
- House dust mites and other animals do not find a suitable habitat in the synthetic fibers.
- Diverse properties. Polyester, latex or foam fillings are available in many different degrees of hardness.
Synthetic fibers are therefore often the first choice. The various synthetic fiber types each have decisive advantages and disadvantages.
Polyester tends to clump together
Pure polyester fillings (synthetic fibers, hollow fibers etc.) should not be washed or only washed by hand, because the fine fibers clump together very quickly.
The formerly fluffy pillow quickly feels hard and without elasticity after a few washes. Cheap pillows in particular suffer from this.
Cotton wool is even more vulnerable

However, the pillows have one disadvantage: The foam is very sensitive and should only be washed by hand.
Beware of cheap pillows
Unfortunately, there are also manufacturers who simply fill their pillows with the cheapest foam in order to make quick money.
When you unpack, you will encounter an unpleasant plastic odor, which – possibly together with some pollutants – spreads throughout the bedroom.
So please do not save in the wrong place and choose a recommended variant (e.g. this one – but there are other recommendations below).
Conclusion on the synthetic fiber & foam pillows
For many people, a foam cushion is by far the best choice. No other filling combines so many advantages.
Not only are they incredibly comfortable, they also adapt to the natural shape of the body – and thereby support it.
If you have the money – a foam pillow really doesn’t cost the world – then this filling can noticeably improve the quality of sleep and alleviate neck complaints.
Pillows with micro-pearls are similar to classic down pillows (and are also allergy-friendly). They are also a little cheaper to buy.
Orthopedic pillows
Together with foam, orthopedic pillows have experienced a real boom in recent years.
- Their shape is based on the human body to optimally support the neck area and to ensure a straight spine.
- Orthopedic sleep aids are usually narrower and lower than normal pillows. They are available in different forms:
The best known are the pillows with 2 bulges on the top. You have probably seen such a variant before:
Such a neck support pillow is great for (occasional) side sleepers, as it keeps the neck in balance in this position.
However, there are also other variants that are more like a classic pillow. These are then especially suitable for those who sleep on their backs and are a little flatter.
Height-adjustable pillows are a compromise. Most often they consist of a solid core with a removable cover or a few inserts.
Do I really need an orthopedic pillow?
No. If your existing pillow already ensures healthy and symptom-free sleep, then you do not necessarily need such a special pillow.
But if you are looking for a new sleep aid anyway, then you can use an orthopedic pillow.
Due to their design, these meet the most important requirements for healthy sleep: not too big & wide, sufficiently comfortable and adapted to the body.
Down pillows
The classic under the pillow. Down is soft sub-feathers (without a hard keel) and is therefore ideal as a filling material.
- Down not only feels wonderfully soft, but also protects against the cold at night.
- However, they only support the head to a limited extent – and have to be shaken regularly.
For this reason, most manufacturers add feathers (e.g. from ducks or geese). The harder springs with keel make the pillow a little more elastic.
If you change position, for example, the pillow will partly straighten up again. The higher the proportion, the harder the pillow is.
The feathers also reduce night sweating – the higher the down percentage, the more heat the pillow stores.
Feather pillows
Feather pillows are a special variant of down pillows. They have at least 70% feathers and are significantly more dimensionally stable than normal down pillows.
On the other hand, you don’t sleep quite as fluffily and can be woken up from time to time by outstanding keels.
Your preferences decide which of the two variants brings better sleep. The significantly more expensive feather pillows are not automatically better.
Beware of allergies
Down and especially feather pillows offer dust mites an optimal living space. Allergy sufferers should therefore wash their down products regularly at at least 60 ° C.
But even the best hygiene is sometimes of no use – so if you suffer from allergies, it is better to use one of the other options.
Conclusion on down pillows
Down pillows are one of the most comfortable fillings and provide cozy warmth, especially in winter.
However, you only partially support the body. This is fine for those who sleep on their backs, but there is a lack of stability for those who sleep on their sides.
Down pillows must also be washed regularly to avoid mite and fungus infestation, which find an optimal breeding ground between the warm feathers.
Natural hair pillows
The same applies to pillows with natural hair filling (e.g. camel hair, cashmere or virgin sheep’s wool).
Due to their natural properties, they bring relief from night sweats, but they are the ideal breeding ground for house dust mites and mold.
If you don’t suffer from allergies & wash your bedding regularly, then such a luxurious pillow might still be an option – especially if you regularly wake up sweaty.
Grain pillows & scented pillows
These pillows represent a further special variant. You can with all possible

These variants are only conditionally suitable as sleeping pillows: They are too hard & do not adapt sufficiently to the shape of the head. This leads to pressure pain and tension.
These types of pillows make great sleeping aids
However, grain pillows are excellent sleeping aids – especially in winter. You can heat the pillows in the oven and then use them as heat storage.
Herbal & scented pillows can also improve your sleep and provide a pleasant smell in the bedroom.
These variants do not replace a real pillow – but they are a worthwhile addition that can have a positive influence on the quality of your sleep.
Wood & bamboo pillows
A few years ago, pillows with wooden fillings (chips) were also extremely popular because of their smell. In the meantime, however, this trend has subsided again, as the hard pillows leave a lot to be desired in terms of sleeping comfort.
The same applies here: This variant is only partially suitable for the head. You can still use such a pillow as a fragrant sleep aid.
Water-core pillow
For some years now there have also been special “water pillows” that are supposed to ensure even more comfortable sleep.
Whether you sleep better on such a pillow than on normal variants, however, depends on your personal preferences. A water core does not always offer a better quality of sleep.
The filling quantity is an advantage – this allows you to adjust the degree of hardness of the pillow individually. The fuller the pillow, the heavier & harder it feels.
A water pillow is therefore ideal for experimenting with different degrees of hardness. As long as you avoid cheap manufacturers, you don’t have to worry about leaking, wet pillows
A disadvantage could be the water filling itself – it simply feels different to foam or down (both of which are a little more springy). So only try it yourself .
Be careful with the size
Normal cushions are available in 3 different versions in most shops:
- 80 x 80 cm is the common standard size
- 40 x 60 cm and 60 x 80 cm are partly common
There are also countless special sizes (e.g. the side sleeper pillows or orthopedic cushions mentioned above, which I will discuss below).
However, when purchasing covers, these 3 sizes will be your greatest success.
Avoid the standard variant
Important to know: The standard size 80 × 80 is too big for most people!
The shoulders are mostly on the pillow and not on the mattress. This causes the entire spine to curve and sleep suffers.
In a normal bed with a height of around 200cm there is only limited space – it is better to use a smaller version.
It is best not to be too wide
The wider the pillow, the deeper the head sinks in the middle. Therefore, it is better to choose a narrow model.
This is particularly important for people who sleep on their side, because otherwise the sleep aid presses the face throughout the night and leaves unsightly marks (and, according to the latest scientific studies, can also lead to blemishes and acne).
In summary: the right pillow should neither be too big nor too wide. Better to choose a smaller version (80 x 40 cm or smaller).

The number of different filling options is endless & can quickly become overwhelming. Therefore, ask yourself only these 2 questions for a 1st preselection:
- Which sleeping position do I spend most of the time in?
- Does something speak against a pillow with elastic foam?
Foam pillows combine the most advantages – however, they are a little more expensive than most alternatives made of synthetic fibers or feathers.
- In addition, some people are so used to their down pillows that it can be difficult to switch.
- Nevertheless, you should seriously consider buying a foam pillow, because no variant is as neck-friendly and comfortable.
So it is best to narrow down the selection based on the 2 questions above before you buy (or see the pillow recommendations below).
How long will my new pillow last?
A difficult question to answer – even for experts. As a rough rule of thumb, you should replace even the most expensive pillows after a maximum of 5 years.
Then they are usually not only saggy, but also anything but hygienic.
Even with consistent care (more on this below), various body fluids such as sweat collect inside the pillow over the years.
Are there differences between the materials and the processing?
In my experience, pillows from a quality manufacturer last significantly longer than any cheaply patched up products from China.
So far, so unsurprisingly. In the case of supposed bargains, the filling also clumps faster.
After a few washes, pressure points can form, which cause tension. Cheap synthetic fiber fillings (polyester, wadding) are particularly susceptible to this.
But down pillows also lose their elasticity and cleanliness noticeably over the years – they should be replaced after about 3 years in order to prevent mite and fungus infestation.
Fillings made of polyester balls or foam usually last the longest – for reasons of hygiene, however, this does not exceed 5 years .
Which pillow case fits my pillow?
In addition to the pillow itself, choosing the right cover also ensures better sleep – after all, you can feel it on your skin every night.
The covers are already included in many bedding sets – but you may also need a new cover when you buy a new pillow to improve your sleeping experience all round .
A recommended pillowcase should meet these characteristics:
Comfort. Whenever you nestle your face against the pillow, you shouldn’t want to stop. You should not feel satisfied by less.
Hygiene. The duvet cover must protect against mold and dust mites. It should also be washable at high temperatures. That kills germs & the like.
Look. Of course, the cover should also match the rest of the bedroom furnishings . The more comfortable you feel here, the deeper and healthier you will sleep.
Normal cotton is usually sufficient
There are a variety of different materials – from bamboo fiber to high-tech plastic. Some of them are definitely justified, but in 90% of cases normal cotton of high quality will do the same.
It is best to pay attention to the highest possible number of threads (over 400) in order to sleep as softly and comfortably as possible.
Info: The higher the number of threads, the finer the bed linen. As a result, hotel beds often feel particularly fluffy.
You should still pay attention to that
You will spend around a third of your day on your pillow – for this reason it should be as free of harmful substances as possible.
This is of course difficult to verify for us consumers.
- Certificates (e.g. Oeko-Tex ) which guarantee a minimum level of safety for the materials used provide assistance.

This does not provide 100% security against hidden pollutants, but at least you can minimize a possible risk.
