The best over-the-counter & natural sleep aids

These herbal & over-the-counter sleep aids provide relaxation: Read here for important tips and everything about the risks of incorrect use.

Who does not know it?

After an eventful and exciting day, we feel exhausted and look forward to regenerating while we sleep.

But there is something that keeps us awake and mentally active despite the physical tiredness.

  • Circulating thoughts about upcoming obligations
  • The important deadline for a project
  • Concern for family and friends

Psychological stress can keep us awake and literally rob us of sleep.

In the morning we then feel as if we have been exhausted and as if we have not even entered the deep sleep phases to recover.

When you wake up, it feels like before you fell asleep. No noticeable recovery, just exhaustion.

First of all, I can reassure you: you are not alone with your sleep problems. Neither in the world nor in Germany. Rather, in good company.

  • About 25% of the German population suffer from regular sleep disorders. Are you a shift worker? There are even almost 40% of all those people with sleep disorders . So pretty critical numbers.
  • There are also over 80 different sleep disorders. These can occur at any stage of life. From toddlers to aged senior citizens, nobody is spared just because of their age.

Some of these disorders mean that we can not fall asleep or stay asleep .

I, too, had to struggle with such problems falling asleep in various phases of my life.

  • Although relatively rare compared to many other people, these phases felt extremely exhausting and somehow endless.
  • Fortunately, these phases of psychological unrest in my case disappeared after a few days for various reasons.

But what if this temporary problem of falling asleep turns into a stressful permanent condition? Can I personally help with sleeping pills? What else do I need to keep in mind?

Just jump to the chapter that interests you most. Or read the entire article (all information is interesting).

Before the actual article, an important note:

Do you suffer from persistent sleep problems and need professional help?

Then I would strongly advise you not to read any further. Instead, you should have a specialist examine you.

My article is not a substitute for a medical analysis and is certainly not intended to be a medical advisor.

I am not Dr. Google and can neither treat you nor free you from your suffering.

As the only real and meaningful tip for permanent lack of sleep or even insomnia, I recommend that you consult a doctor you trust and get professional treatment.

For the reasons mentioned, I can neither recommend nor advise against prescription drugs.

Rather, this article is intended to summarize some well-known tips and tricks for mild sleep problems and how one or the other sleep aid can be helpful.

Over-the-counter vs natural herbal sleep aids

First, however, it is important to distinguish between over-the-counter and natural sleeping pills.

What are over-the-counter sleeping pills?

Over-the-counter sleeping pills are also called over-the-counter sleeping pills or OTC sleeping pills (‘Over the Counter’).

  • These are drugs that you can buy in pharmacies or drugstores.
  • You do not need to consult a doctor beforehand, nor to present a prescription prescribed by him at the pharmacy.

These drugs are known as over-the-counter sleep aids.

However, prices for non-prescription sleeping pills vary greatly from region to region. Pharmacists can use free pricing for these products or recommend different sleeping pills for your case.

For this reason, I would like to recommend freely available sleeping pills below, which you can order from Amazon and have it delivered. Here the prices are more transparent and stable, and the products are more tried and tested anyway.

What are natural sleeping pills?

In contrast to over-the-counter sleeping pills, natural sleeping pills, as the name suggests, consist of 100% natural ingredients – e.g. hop tea or bonbos with valerian.

They can also be purchased in pharmacies, or in supermarkets (or even free of charge in nature).

The vernacular also likes to refer to these well-known aids as grandmother’s home remedies.

  • After all, in earlier times doctors were viewed critically and only consulted in medical emergencies.
  • Or there was a lack of money, comprehensive medical care, belief in conventional medicine, etc.

Our ancestors were able to treat sleep problems themselves without a doctor. Mostly with the active ingredients from mother nature that many people still swear by today.

But before you poach in nature in search of these well-tried remedies and harvest entire gardens or even forests bare, let me tell you one thing: Even natural sleeping pills have to be dosed sensibly and correctly – Hildegard von Bingen already knew that.

Too much of a good thing also has side effects:

Side effects of freely available sleeping pills

But while we’re on the subject of side effects of non-prescription sleeping pills:

Of course, you should always take these into account and always read the instruction leaflet on the packaging.

  • You may be reacting to the described side effects that every medicine brings with it.
  • Over-the-counter sleeping pills also have side effects that you should be aware of. Especially if you are allergic.

Therefore, you should deal with the respective over-the-counter sleep aid before buying it and check its side effects. Otherwise it will be a bad buy anyway and your sleep problems cannot be treated.

An over-the-counter sleep aid shouldn’t become a nighttime habit

The over-the-counter sleeping pills from below are meant to serve their purpose, of course, but don’t make yourself dependent on them.

If it works once, fine. If it works twice, fine. A third time is still good. But regular use of a sleeping pill is not what I would recommend.

The over-the-counter sleeping pills are only intended to encourage or rather encourage you to fall asleep. Even if the contained active ingredients are usually not addictive due to their low dose, you should not get used to sleeping pills.

Regular consumption of sleeping pills can quickly and carelessly become a habit. The sleeping pill is only intended to help you fall asleep.

  • You are also doing your liver a disservice by taking regular medication.
  • After all, this organ is there for the breakdown of exogenous substances and has a lot to do with your normal lifestyle alone.

At the latest if it is consumed regularly, the original purpose of an over-the-counter sleeping aid is no longer effective.

I can only repeat myself: If you have permanent difficulties falling asleep or even serious (psychological) problems, you should consult your trusted specialist.

And don’t try an over-the-counter drug for the first time. In this case, professional help is more effective and more targeted.

Use the strength of your body

Now this article is actually supposed to deal with over-the-counter and natural sleeping pills. Nonetheless, you may want to analyze from a different perspective why you cannot fall asleep.

Unless you have already tried, there are a few things you can try that have nothing to do with sleeping pills and still promote sleep or at least make you naturally tired.

So before you rush to resort to any remedy, you may not have exhausted all options. Believe in the strength of your body.

If your mind is awake in the evening, so may your body. To put it bluntly: I also feel it when I’m too unbalanced or have not moved enough during the day.

Without sport, exercise, social interactions, enough daylight and the desired exhaustion, I don’t fall asleep so quickly.

There are a few other ways that have been shown to relax and calm the body:

  • Relaxation exercises such as yoga, autogenic training , Pilates, etc.
  • Books and audio books
  • Exercise before bed , active hobbies, etc.
  • Spend enough time in daylight
  • Everything in the direction of exercise, walks, etc.

Now, after the physical activities, it will again take a while for the metabolism in your body to calm down.

Immediately after the workout with the release of your energies, the organism needs a few minutes to shut down again.

However, I can say from my own experience that I ALWAYS sleep better when I have at least had enough exercise.

Of course, it was even better with strenuous energy performance related to sport. But that’s only my personal assessment of my individual sleep pattern.

Still, I don’t want to suggest that any of these active variants is the golden key to your sleep. But if you’ve never tried it for yourself, you can’t prove the opposite to yourself.

The best natural & herbal sleep aids

Attention, a little concentration is required:

  • All natural sleeping pills are also non-prescription sleeping pills.
  • But vice versa, not all over-the-counter sleep aids are natural sleep aids at the same time.

Why is that?

In contrast to the over-the-counter sleeping pills below, the following recommendations always consist of 100% natural ingredients. They are also called herbal sleeping pills.

I don’t mean to say that the above over-the-counter sleeping pills are inherently unhealthy.

But with purely natural substances you promote physical well-being in the original way without any additives.

It should be noted that there are several ways to use a natural sleep aid.

I would like to first describe some alternative options before I get to the well-known home remedies.

Consume vitamins & micronutrients

This is not intended to be a chapter on biochemical reactions in the human body.

Rather, my aim is to briefly explain to you which micronutrients / vitamins have which effect on your sleep.

This then forms the basis for all other natural sleeping pills that you can consume as a sleep aid.

Support a healthy sleep among other things:

  • Magnesium – has a relaxing and relieving effect
  • Vitamin B6 – has both an antidepressant and a regulating effect on the sleep-waking rhythm
  • Zinc – zinc deficiency is often the cause of sleep disorders and decreased hormone production
  • L-tryptophan: this amino acid is the precursor to melatonin and helps you fall asleep more easily
  • 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan: extends the REM phase by 25% and increases deep sleep
  • Vitamin D: improves the quality of your sleep and extends the duration of your sleep

Vitamin B6, tryptophan and magnesium are required for the natural production of melatonin. Do you suffer from nutrient deficiency and therefore cannot fall asleep?

  1. So before you swallow an over-the-counter sleep aid, question yourself and your eating habits.
  2. It may be enough if you turn a screw or two with regard to your diet and supply your body with sufficient nutrients.

And by no means all of the micronutrients that trigger your desired reaction and make you fall asleep easier. It is just a selection of the best-known nutrients that you can promote through a balanced diet and targeted consumption.

The topic is quite exciting and with the right analysis you may be able to draw conclusions about your quality of life or your sleep rhythm.

Promote plant-based melatonin intake

Melatonin is a human hormone that is responsible for sleep and the regulation of the internal clock.

This endogenous messenger substance is formed in the brain, released in the dark and regulates the day-night rhythm.

If you’ve combined correctly, a dark room will add more melatonin. In the last chapter of my article, I listed a few bonus tips on this topic that don’t really belong here.

But you can also accelerate the release of melatonin in daylight. Melatonin is also found in small amounts in the following foods:

  • PROTEIN SOURCES: Eggs, salmon, sardines, herring
  • NUTS: walnuts, cashews, almonds, pumpkin seeds
  • DAIRY PRODUCTS: milk, edam cheese, parmesan
  • WHEAT AND LEGUMES: beans, soy, oatmeal
  • FRUITS: avocado, bananas, cherries, apricots, blueberries
  • SPICES: cardamom and coriander

All of these foods contain the micronutrients mentioned earlier and help you fall asleep naturally.

However, you should bear in mind that melatonin is only found in tiny amounts in these foods. However, if you are curious about how these melatonin-containing foods work, I recommend cautious consumption.

In order to achieve a noticeable effect, you would have to eat kilos of cherries with coriander in large quantities. I really don’t need to explain to you that the combination of these listed foods does not taste good and that excessive consumption leads to stomach ache.

I found a study on night milk on this subject particularly amusing. Milk from cows milked before sunrise is said to have an increased melatonin content and thus promote sleep.

From a rational point of view, however, I personally consider this to be absolute nonsense. Just because the cow to be milked is tired before sunrise does not mean that consuming her milk does the same for me.

Researchers see it the same way . The topic of night milk is highly controversial and is dismissed as a marketing gag. I definitely thought it was worth mentioning and I didn’t want to withhold this little and entertaining anecdote from you.

Natural home remedies

Briefly described at the beginning, I would now like to briefly dedicate myself to those home remedies that your grandmother swore by. The four best-known recommendations are always:

  • valerian
  • Hopfen
  • Melisse
  • lavender

These mentioned home remedies contain arguably the best natural substances for sleeping problems. And indeed, your grandmother was absolutely right about these natural home remedies.

Consuming these natural home remedies promotes sleep. Whether you want to consume these remedies in capsule form or as liquid sleeping tea is up to you.

The effect is always the same or of a similar nature.

TEE

From a purely logical point of view, the capsules naturally consist of a higher concentrated dose than the plant.

However, tea is more natural and digestible. Ultimately, it’s up to you whether you want to chew, sip, drink or swallow these home remedies.

You can buy all forms either online as noted, in pharmacies or in stores. So you don’t have to graze entire meadows or fields for these plants and laboriously prepare everything yourself in the kitchen.

Note: There is more information about sleep & nerve teas here .

Highly concentrated doses – is that still natural?

All of the aforementioned active ingredients can be bought as high-dose products.

  • But be careful: just because the ingredients are natural does not necessarily mean the concentrations must be.
  • On the other hand, such preparations are often much more convenient: instead of drinking 2 liters of valerian a day, simply take a pill in the evening.

As you can probably imagine, there is a huge selection of manufacturers and products. It is difficult to keep track of things.

I could also give endless recommendations for different target groups – e.g. combinations that combine all sleep-promoting substances of these natural sleeping pills with one capsule.

However, I just want to focus on 5 exceptional natural remedies in the following section:

Hochkonzentriertes Melatonin

As a reminder, melatonin is released by your body to make you feel tired. So much for the short version.

Melatonin tablets are only approved without a prescription up to a maximum dosage of 1 mg per day in Germany. In other countries, higher-dose melatonin can also be purchased.

Incidentally, with the following capsules you do not consume the melatonin directly, but in a pre-pre-stage (the body forms it itself from the ingested components).

These capsules are vegan and made from the fermentation of rice. L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid and the precursor of serotonin. Serotonin, in turn, is the precursor to the important hormone melatonin.

Even if this is theoretically a purely biological substance, you should of course not consume it unthinkingly. “A lot helps a lot” is the wrong approach here and can also cause damage

All-in-One

This combination of many different natural active ingredients is a highly concentrated dietary supplement and is designed to specifically promote your sleep.

The manufacturer warns: “After taking the product, the ability to participate in road traffic may be impaired.”

So this natural remedy seems to be more than effective!

A spray (!)

I was also amazed at this product. But it makes perfect sense if I think about it more carefully. Anyone who has had the opportunity to stroll through a lavender field once in their life knows about the relaxing effects of the flowering plant. And how pleasant the smell can be.

Highly concentrated and essential oils release a soothing scent. For all those users who prefer not to swallow tablets or pills but still want to and still need a sleep aid.

By the way, your bedroom smells like a walk through a lavender field in spring.

A highly concentrated calming tea

Classic black tea always contains caffeine. Since this sleeping tea consists of 17 different biological plant substances, it does not contain caffeine. You do not necessarily stay awake longer by consuming this tea.

On the contrary: the combination of these natural active ingredients should have a sleep-promoting effect and be performed as a calming ritual in the evening.

65 grams of tea may be enough for around 30 to 35 cups of tea every day. On the other hand, this highly concentrated tea can be tested with this amount for a few times before it is bought regularly.

I particularly like that the delivery also includes a free E-BOOK with 10 helpful tips for better sleep.

For vegans

This vegan dietary supplement is supposed to counteract stress, restlessness and nervousness and to calm you down. If used correctly, this remedy can have a relaxing effect in the evening and promote sleep.

Without genetic engineering, without additives, without dyes. These 120 capsules are enough to attract you for several months if consumed regularly.

As already written, there are still many similar remedies. But let me tell you one thing: Before you ingest these nutrients with high-dose dietary supplements, you can also eat a more balanced and healthier diet.

Even the evening tea with natural active ingredients certainly brings its health benefits with it when used regularly. But I see the only ‘real danger’ that you can convince yourself of a placebo effect and only be able to sleep through and because of remedy X

You are undoubtedly doing something good for your body and helping with a natural sleep aid. A smart change in diet with the right nutrients does the same thing, is cheaper and is still natural.

While these dietary supplements are effective and effective, they can be very expensive if used regularly. Not everything has to be regulated by high-dose tablets or capsules, if it can also be done naturally.

To put it another way: I prefer to eat a salmon fillet and eat healthy types of fruit and drink healthy tea before I consume a highly concentrated pill.

I would only use this if there was no other way. But that is one of my fundamental decisions. I love to feast too much and would always prefer a rich and balanced diet to a vitamin bomb.

The opposite example: avoid certain foods

Of course, not all foods have a positive effect on your sleep. On the contrary:

There are a few things to beware of. These foods can inhibit or impair your sleep for a number of reasons:

  • Caffeinated drinks (e.g. coffee, some teas, energy drinks)
  • Alcoholic beverages disrupt sleep
  • Sweets with a high sugar content
  • Poorly digestible foods (e.g. raw vegetables and meat)
  • Peppers and lettuce

I only advise you to avoid these negative effects in the evening hours before going to bed. You are an adult and can decide for yourself whether and when and how much of these foods you want to consume.

Since all of these mentioned foods are partly stimulating and partly energetic, you shouldn’t consume them before going to bed. Metabolism and digestion are stimulated with these foods and drinks and not only you literally have something to nibble on.

Your body needs some time to process and metabolize the foods mentioned above. Even if you are tired in bed in the evening, your body processes all the things that you have done to it.

In the worst case, this can also cause sleepless nights and keep you awake. Even if it sounds strange: But, conversely, a sleeping pill can just as well mean changing your diet or omitting certain foods and drinks.

Popular over-the-counter sleep aids

The best-selling drugs include over-the-counter sleeping pills.

There are certainly many people who use the supposedly harmless sleeping pills for various reasons.

The main arguments are usually:

  • Fear of potential addiction to prescription sleeping pills
  • Rather, a quick pill from the pharmacy is swallowed before the doctor is consulted
  • Prices for non-prescription drugs are cheaper, pharmacies are easier to reach

However, over-the-counter preparations are not automatically safe. They can only be classified as harmless because you can buy these sleeping pills over the counter from the pharmacy.

Over-the-counter medications will undoubtedly help you get a good night’s sleep. But if used incorrectly or regularly, as well as overdosing, they can also be addictive and permanently change your usual sleep pattern.

So we’re talking about sleeping pills that contain artificial or synthetic ingredients. Over-the-counter sleeping pills are called hypnotics if they contain at least one synthetic substance. Because they have a calming effect on the nervous system.

The effects of over-the-counter sleeping pills on your body

Often the doses of the preparations are lower. However, sleeping pills of all kinds affect the heart rate, brain and nervous system after ingestion.

Over-the-counter sleeping pills are no exception, they just feel a bit “lighter”.

However, this can be problematic if you already suffer from illnesses and take other medications regularly. In combination with over-the-counter sleeping pills, these can have undesirable effects on your health.

The effect of the medication you take regularly can also fizzle out or be intensified. So read the package insert carefully and check whether you can even combine the sleeping pills.

So don’t resort to over-the-counter sleeping pills too quickly, but be both aware and sure that you can and tolerate it. If you are not sure, the well-known saying applies:

“Ask your doctor or pharmacist”

After this detailed warning at the beginning of the article, I would now like to recommend the few over-the-counter sleeping pills. At the same time, however, explain why you can rely on the respective remedy.

Antihistaminika

These funds are primarily used as antiallergic agents. The noticeable effects of an allergy should be suppressed and the suffering of allergy sufferers alleviated.

I have also taken an antiallergic from my friend. She is allergic and therefore needs the active ingredients contained in it to combat her allergy.

All attention: I didn’t think that these allergy pills would knock me out so much. I took a pill about 30-45 minutes before sleep and slept completely through the night. And purely from the hours longer than usual.

Antihistamines should therefore be taken and enjoyed with caution. ONLY consume at bedtime. Not if you still want to drive or operate machinery.

One advantage of this over-the-counter drug is that it cannot cause physical dependence. A certain habituation effect cannot be ruled out, but if you take it regularly you will not become a real addict.

Of course, there are still side effects. However, these are different for each user. However, you should not take antihistamines for more than two weeks. Light-headedness, dizziness, and mental impairments can also negatively affect your daily routine.

Please note that by taking antihistamines you cannot enter the REM phase. This deep sleep phase is important for a healthy sleep, but does not occur after the consumption of antihistamines.

So it can help you to fall asleep, but this sleep is not really restful.

Benzodiazepines – The strong sleeping pills

These preparations have several effects. In addition to having a calming, anxiety and antispasmodic effect, they should also promote sleep.

So, of course, caution is advised if several effects can occur at the same time.

The ingredient diazepam is the same ingredient Valium is sold with. So this ingredient should be taken seriously. As with all benzodiazepines, the greatest potential for dependence is the greatest problem for you personally.

In contrast to the antihistamines described above, these agents do not affect the REM phase. So you can count on a deep sleep phase after taking this over-the-counter drug.

And this is exactly where the temptation lies. Namely, the reckless control of deep sleep phases. So use this preparation wisely.

Now there are a few remedies here and there. I don’t want to advertise any pharmaceutical giants or list products at random.

Rather, I would like to list pragmatic tips and tricks that should work in your body in a natural or plant-based way.

This not only benefits your wallet, but also your health.

A few basic things about the recommendations

As I have already indicated above with the individual recommendations of a pharmacist, there is of course also the legal situation relating to the respective pharmaceutical law.

Country-specific differences in non-prescription sleeping pills

As little as I am Dr. I am Google, so I am so little familiar with the availability of individual drugs or sleeping pills in other countries.

This article is written in German and of course attracts readers from all German-speaking areas.

So I don’t know how things will look in Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg or Liechtenstein with the same medicines and deliveries. Therefore I can only look at and depict the situation in Germany.

The products I recommend are all listed on Amazon. However, it may not be approved as an over-the-counter sleep aid in your country due to the legal situation.

Please check me out if one or the other product is not available in your country.

Always follow the recommended dose

However, you should never exceed the recommended dose of over-the-counter sleep aid. There is a reason why specific information on the dose is always noted on the package inserts.

It is, of course, tempting to use these relatively lighter sleeping pills and higher doses to produce an enhanced effect. An arbitrary overdose of the over-the-counter sleeping aid does not necessarily bring the desired result.

Not to mention the possible side effects or damage to health that a self-prescribed overdose can cause. So always use sleeping pills as directed and do not overdo it.

These are seldom really seriously questionable with such sleeping pills. But any overdose can ultimately be counterproductive and have more disadvantages than advantages for you. Or even increase certain side effects.

What else can help

That was far from it on this subject. You can find many more articles on this topic at sleepwithjoy.com.

Further articles

There is also of course the possibility that tea in normal doses can help you fall asleep. On our side, we have already taken a closer look at one or the other tea over the past few years. Below you will find further links to the following drinks:

Are you going through menopause and having trouble sleeping? This specialist article about sleep disorders in menopause by my colleague may be of help to you.

Another article on our site describes what you can do specifically when you have restless sleep and which measures really help . You will not find any information about medication or sleeping pills in this article.

But as further reading for problems related to falling asleep or staying asleep, the content of this article can certainly help you with your personal analysis.

And drugs or sleeping pills don’t always have to lead to the goal of falling asleep.

Therefore I would like to give you a completely different tip regarding your own sleeping place. Sometimes it can help to look at things from a different perspective or to deal with an overarching topic.

I recently published an in-depth article on Feng Shui for a good night’s sleep .

Thanks to this ancient Chinese theory of harmony, you may be able to positively influence your sleep with only minimal changes in your bedroom.

Analyze your bedroom

As already described above, the sleep hormone melatonin ensures a noticeable tiredness even at dusk and when it gets dark.

So if you can clear the bedroom of annoying light sources, you should be able to get tired more easily. Light can enter your bedroom in a number of different ways, for example through

  • Electrical appliances
  • Moonlight
  • External light sources such as street lamps or vehicle headlights on the road
  • Reflections from mirrors or glass
  • Glow-in-the-dark products such as jewelry, accessories and decorative items
  • Daylight from early sunrises

It can be of further help to analyze your bedroom for these weak points and external disruptive factors.

The quieter and darker it is in your bedroom, for example, the sooner the sleep hormone melatonin is released.

Personally, I have been sleeping with earplugs and occasionally with a sleep mask for years . There are very pragmatic reasons for this, because I cannot turn off lights and noises in my sleeping environment.

I live in a very busy urban area and sometimes it is difficult for me to fall asleep. Or I wake up because of the noise in the neighborhood.

The sleep mask also helps me with early sunrises, depending on the season. Sleeping with eye and hearing protection may not be for everyone. But I got used to it over time.

In addition, this set can also help you in combination with a travel pillow for on the go.

Of course, you can also furnish your bedroom optimally. With a few simple sleep aids you can ensure more quality during the night:

Alternatively, it is always helpful to take a closer look at your own sleep behavior:

Closing word

I hope my article has helped you. Sleep disorders can be very debilitating and stressful. Maybe my tips and tricks could help you or one of the foods could help you fall asleep.

Since your doctor has more specialist knowledge than the pharmacist or employee of the drugstore or yourself, this should be the chronological course of treatment for sleep problems.

If none of that helped, there is of course the option of over-the-counter sleeping pills. Treating yourself is of course not advisable without in-depth specialist knowledge. Over-the-counter sleeping pills are also not generally classified as harmless or harmless.

Just because these sleeping pills are over-the-counter without a doctor’s prescription will they treat your condition. With any long-term or serious problem, you will not be able to avoid a doctor’s visit anyway.

So always use over-the-counter products with caution. In any case, I recommend that you first trust in the power of your own body and then rely on the powers of mother nature and her food.

If none of these help, you can try natural / herbal aids or synthetic sleep aids.

I created Sleep Knowledge to share my interests and experiences on healthy sleeping with others. On this page I am therefore dealing with interesting questions about the optimal night’s sleep & everything else that goes with it.
