Test notice
Consumer tests such as those from Öko-Test or Stiftung Warentest are available for duvets, but usually only for a fee.
In addition to important information on materials, sizes and fillings, this expert test also contains valuable tips for better sleep. Here we go!
In the first part I have summarized branded products for you that have consistently convinced me during my research. Then it continues with the detailed buying guide.
Part 1 – Branded duvets at a glance
Before you learn more about sizes, materials and fillings, let me introduce you to the most compelling branded duvets.
- You will find duvets in different price categories.
- All are of high quality and workmanship.
- In addition, the blankets meet all the requirements for healthy sleep.
Here you will find true premium models, test winners and price-performance tips.
In addition to brands such as Kunsemüller, Traumina or Brinkaus, there are a number of other providers that have been put through their paces. This is exactly what I would like to show you below.
Premium class duvets
The Ferraris among duvets include products from Kauffmann, Billerbeck and Häussling.
The latter in particular is a really old hand in the business who has been manufacturing duvets for several decades.
Despite the high price category in which the presented duvet is, it is a German quality product with a long-term durability guarantee – this is what the provider promises.
Classic duvets
If you have fewer storage options, you should definitely opt for a so – called year – round or four – season duvet .
Although such duvets have to withstand 365 days a year, most models can be washed in the washing machine at up to 60 degrees and then even dried in the tumble dryer.
Brands such as Dormabell, Centa Star or Schäfer offer duvet models in a medium price category.
Those who prefer a natural filling are on the safe side with duvets from Schäfer. Here I would like to tell you a little secret:
Schäfer products are much cheaper online than in specialist shops (you can save up to 50% in some cases).
The following model is available in five different sizes.
Duvets price-performance winner
Duvets from Frankenstolz are not only among the quality products on the market, they are also very popular due to their fair price-performance ratio.
You also get free shipping with every online order.
The model presented is available in an amazing eight sizes and is particularly suitable for allergy sufferers, because the duvet can be washed in the washing machine at 95 degrees.
Test winner: duvets between 20–50 euros
For spontaneous bargain hunters, I have very good news: They exist:
- Inexpensive, high quality duvets,
- made of fluffy and pollutant-free materials,
- that can be washed in the washing machine
- and even meet the requirements of the “Oeko-Tex Standard” textile seal.
In addition, all models are suitable for allergy sufferers and are available in different sizes. Among them are quality products from brands such as Paradies or Dunlopillo, but also unknown suppliers such as the Amazon house brand.
I have put together a small overview of my personal test winners for summer and winter:
Part 2 – Your Duvet Buying Guide
In the following chapters I will give you all the important information about duvets so that you can make the right decision when buying.
They experience:
- Which materials of duvets suit you.
- How to choose the right size.
- Why duvet quilting is relevant for summer and winter months.
- Care tips for everyday life and further cleaning instructions.
Read the information carefully. In the text, I will also point you directly to the corresponding duvets, which I liked very much in the test.
Material: duvet cover & filling
Duvets consist of a functional upper material (cover material) that is breathable and mostly very easy to care for.
Inside is the so-called filling material, which determines the warmth properties of the duvet.
Tip: Both materials determine a comfortable sleep and are of different quality and workmanship depending on the provider.
In any case, you should consider whether you sweat a lot at night or whether you suffer from allergies.
Cover material for the duvet
Conventional textiles that are used to process the surface of the duvet include:
- cotton
- Polyester
- Material mix of polyester & cotton
- Microfiber
- Batiste (cotton & linen)
- silk
The fact is that all materials are air-permeable and are suitable for the washing machine. However, the filling material of a duvet is more important.
Filling material of the duvet
The pricing of a duvet always depends on the respective filling material that is used in its manufacture.
- High price category: silk, cashmere and camel hair
- Middle price segment: cotton and down
- Lower price level: lyocell and microfiber
Below I will explain all the details about the materials to you.
down
The classic and most popular fillings include feathers and down. Pay attention to a high proportion of down comforters.
Rule of thumb: the more down there is, the lighter your blanket.
The down absorbs a lot of moisture, which is why it is very elastic and moisture-regulating. In this way, down comforters ensure a comfortable, dry sleeping environment.
With good quality and workmanship, down comforters can last for many years.
Tip: Down pillows go well with down duvets . Read about the advantages and disadvantages of pillows and how to properly care for them.
Lyocell
The material consists of cellulose, which is a type of synthetic fiber and can absorb moisture perfectly without the blanket feeling noticeably damp.
Lyocell duvets are particularly suitable for people who sweat heavily at night or who are allergic.
Microfiber / polyester
Synthetic microfiber blankets are a sensible alternative for allergy sufferers.
This polyester material is light and warming, but only partially regulates moisture and is therefore not recommended for people who sweat.
Natural fibers
Trust in the power of nature. Natural materials such as merino wool, cotton, hemp or camel hair are good choices.
The natural materials are light and warm. If this material doesn’t give you enough warmth in winter, electric blankets can be the ideal solution for you.
cashmere
Cashmere is a wonderful filler material because the material adapts perfectly to all temperature conditions and offers excellent thermal properties.
Even though cashmere blankets impressed with their properties in tests and practical tests, you should have an extra euro in your pocket for this filling.
Kamelflaum
A little exotic among the filling materials is soft camel fluff.
The filling is not only fluffy, but also regulates the moisture under the duvet and can be used in both warm and cold seasons.
Camel hair duvets are very light and are offered for an affordable price. Testing is worth it!
Sizes overview for duvets
There are comforters for adults, toddlers, and even babies. The dimensions are based on the bed size and are therefore available for both single and double beds.
All duvets are of course offered in various standard sizes, shapes and dimensions. Here is an overview:
- 135 x 200 cm (suitable for single sleepers)
- 155 x 220 cm (comfort size for single sleepers)
- 200 x 200 cm (suitable for up to two people)
- 200 cm x 220 cm (comfort size for up to two people)
- 220 cm x 240 cm (suitable for families)
- 240 cm x 220 cm (suitable for families)
Special size: duvets for babies & children
The small models include duvets for babies and toddlers with a size of 80 x 80 cm.
Caution: Doctors and midwives generally advise against equipping the cot with a blanket in order to avoid the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.
A normal, square blanket can build up heat and cause the child to suffocate.
So-called sleeping bags are suitable for toddlers and babies aged 0 to 2 years. You can find out more about this topic in the “ Blankets for babies ” section .
Summer or winter? The quilting shape is decisive!
“It was a mother who had four children: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Spring brings flowers, summer the clover, autumn brings grapes, winter the snow. “
Do you still know this old nursery rhyme? Well, meanwhile the seasons are more unpredictable than ever and in the bedroom there is also indecision about the right duvet when the outside temperature changes.
Tip: The thin summer blanket with cotton filling or the thick winter down comforter? Life is easier with a year-round blanket .
Regardless of which type of duvet you choose – the quilting shape determines the heat balance of your new duvet!
Bedspread quilting
All duvets are determined by a specific quilting shape that serves to fix the filling inside.
The different boxes are designed to prevent the interior materials from slipping. In addition, the quilting shape influences the thermal insulation of your duvet.
There are various quilting shapes that have established and proven themselves in the market. Most often you will find quilts with cassette quilting, which is then subdivided into 3 × 4 or 4 × 6 individual cassettes.
Duvet quilting for summer duvets
Summer duvets are sewn fabric on fabric to intentionally create cooling zones.
You can find all information about the perfect summer duvet in the large buying guide to summer duvets .
Duvet quilting for winter blankets
The materials of a winter blanket are not sewn directly to one another, but connected to one another via bars.
These can be of different levels. The higher the bars, the fewer cold bridges there are. Really thick winter blankets have bar heights of up to 10 cm.
Duvet quilting for 4-season duvets
Year-round covers or 4-season covers have relatively small webs of approx. 2 cm. You will find many recommendations and a buying guide to this type of duvet in the 4-season duvet test .
So before you decide on a duvet, take a look at the supplier’s product description. There you can find out more about the different quilting shapes and manufacturing methods.
Care, cleaning & durability
Proper care will determine the durability of your blanket. For example, you should avoid lying on down comforters so as not to destroy the elasticity of the down.
When it comes to cleaning, however, you can take a deep breath.
- Almost all duvets can now be washed in the washing machine (between 60 to 95 degrees).
- You can also dry most duvets in a regular tumble dryer. However, pay attention to the care instructions of the provider!
Feather beds are an exception. You should definitely give them to a professional dry cleaner.
Duvets in specialist shops
Like butter in the refrigerator, duvets are a staple in your household.
That’s why you can get good, high-quality duvets not only from specialist retailers such as IKEA or the Danish bed warehouse , but also from your supermarket around the corner.
Tip: Sometimes well-known supermarket chains such as LIDL even offer their own online shop so that products such as duvets can be conveniently ordered at home.
Tips for a healthy sleep
The right temperature and humidity in the bedroom are among the most important factors for a good night’s sleep.
Experts recommend temperatures between 16–19 ° degrees – depending on personal preference. In any case, the optimal temperature affects your sleep.
What to do with night sweats If you often wake up bathed in sweat and therefore not sleep at night, then you should definitely find out the causes.
Sometimes a suitable mattress or pad (the cheaper alternative) is enough to counter this:
- Gel topper for mattresses
- Viscoelastic mattress pads
- Topper for the box spring bed
- Mattress topper in the test
However, the duvet is the most important part of a healthy sleep because it regulates your body temperature.
Note: Men and women have different temperature sensations. You will find many expert videos on these topics on the Internet , which are offered by duvet brands such as allnatura.
Conclusion
High-quality duvets are offered by brands and unknown suppliers in a high to low price segment. You can find all test winners and price-performance tips right at the beginning of this article.
There are duvets for all 4 seasons and special designs for summer and winter.
- What is decisive, however, is the filling inside your duvet.
- It is responsible for regulating your body temperature.
- Fillings are usually made of natural or synthetic materials.
Nowadays, all duvets can be washed in the washing machine at 60 to 95 degrees and then dried in the dryer or in the air.
Nevertheless, you should pay attention to the manufacturer’s care instructions. Whenever possible, you should place down duvets in professional hands.
I created Sleep Knowledge to share my interests and experiences on healthy sleeping with others. On this page I am therefore dealing with interesting questions about the optimal night’s sleep & everything else that goes with it.
